Working Hard Doing Nothing | 2008

A brightly coloured floor reminiscent of a warehouse or game show set; a pair of closed plywood boxes, each with a monitor set into the side showing a live CCTV image of the space within. In the context of a dark-wood panelled room, these elements are juxtaposed with their surroundings, alien, though it is uncertain which belongs and which is the intruder. The work explores the idea of doubling, mirroring, twinning. Each box contains a pair of performers, a male and a female as office workers acting out a series of mundane tasks; identical yet different, and somehow inter-reliant. A red folder appears intermittently in each space, exchanged, as if passed from one to another across an indeterminate distance.
